Mrs Bromley-Smith decided that this year we would try and hold Newcastle Academy’s biggest ever coffee event on Friday 30th September as part of the national fundraising Macmillan Biggest Coffee Morning programme. We definitely pulled it off!
The week previously the Newcastle Academy Bake Off competition was announced, open to all students in Years 7-11 for the best home-made cake (taste and decoration) to be brought in and donated to the cause on Friday 30th. Students really rose to the challenge, with several excellent entries arriving for the judges Mr Dolman, Miss Cross and Miss Olojugba to try. Even Mr Dolman was feeling a little overwhelmed after sampling 18 fantastic creations during morning break, but eventually a winner was declared.
1st Place Wiktoria Kotynska Yr 8 / Strawberry Cake
2nd Place Alice Locker / Chocolate Orange Cake
3rd Place Thomas Richards / Chocolate and Strawberry Cake
Special commendations to all the other competitors for some delicious and beautifully decorated masterpieces.
During the morning of Friday 30th the tables in the Hive were truly laden with a wonderful array of delicious temptations, not only from the competition entries, but also lots of other donations which had been brought in by staff and students. Kettles were boiled in readiness, and at lunchtime the Hive was truly buzzing with everyone eager to buy something delicious to go with their tea or coffee.
Over £300 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer cause, and Dennis Vickers Douglas Macmillan Hospice Ambassador came in to receive the donation at a special assembly on Thursday 6th October when the winners were also presented with vouchers and the other entrants all received a certificate.
