The assessment focus at Newcastle Academy is to inform our students what they have done well, and what they need to do to improve their work. We then allow students time to reflect on their feedback and make the necessary changes. We do this through the use of WWW (What Went Well) and EBI (Even Better If).

What Went Well (WWW)

When marking students work we believe it is important to inform the students what they have done well. We do this by writing in the students’ work WWW in purple pen followed by a comment. This is to ensure students continue to do this in their work.

An example is as follows: WWW your use of giving examples to support your point.

Even Better If (EBI)

Where students need help to improve their work, we make a suggested improvement with EBI.

An example is as follows: To improve your work, please explain your point and example. This will increase your grade from a 2 to a 3.

Dedicated Improvement & Reflection Time (D.I.R.T.)

Once the students have read and understood their EBI’s, they are then given time to make the necessary improvements and make even more academic progress. This is completed in DIRT time using green pen, so that teachers can then track the improvements.

Self and Peer Assessment

We empower our students to assess their own work and that of their peers. Students are encouraged to use WWW and EBI. Students complete this assessment in red pen. Once completed, students are again encouraged to make the improvements in DIRT time in green pen.
